Our history connects us. This Pride season, as we stand with the Black Lives Matter movement's reinvigorated demands for an end to racist violence and white supremacy, we honor the black LGBTQ activists who have so often been on the front lines fighting for justice - activists like Marsha P. Johnson, Miss Major, Bayard Rustin and Alicia Garza.
Even when we're apart, our history binds together generation after generation of people who have long fought against brutality, intolerance, and injustice. This month we commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first "Pride" events, which celebrated the Stonewall rebellion in 1969, when trans, lesbian, bisexual and gay people — including Marsha and Miss Major — stood up and fought back against police brutality and repression. As these struggles continue, we all have a role to play in the fight for justice, whether through joining a march, calling elected officials, making a donation, sharing support on social media or learning about our own history and biases.
We are intimately aware of how important it is to reflect on our history in these times of momentous change, which is why we are working hard to make information about the intersectional history of Pride and LGBTQ activism widely available. All month long we are highlighting the history and legacy of queer activism through events, exhibitions, and new online resources. Click on the buttons at right to learn more.
