Every Night Is Ladies Night:

Lesbian Bar Culture Since the ’60s
Panel Discussion at Modern Times Bookstore

SAN FRANCISCO —On Friday, May 11, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., the GLBT Historical Society invites you to a special panel discussion on the history of lesbian bar culture to be held at Modern Times Bookstore.

Join generations of local lesbians and queer women gathering to discuss their experiences of the ultimate dyke meeting, fighting, loving, crying, laughing, and organizing spot: the bar. Exhibit Curator Nic Weinstein will moderate the panel, featuring lesbian historians Nan Alamilla Boyd and Ruth Mahaney among others.

The panel accompanies the “Every Night Is Ladies Night” exhibit running at the Lexington Club through May 20. This exciting new exhibit draws from photos, fliers, and other materials in our internationally known archives. It pays homage to the lesbian women who gathered together and fought for the rights and liberties we enjoy today. It focuses primarily on lesbian bar culture from the 1960s to the present, with an emphasis on the Bay Area.

The panel, co-sponsored by the GLBT Historical Society, is part of Modern Times’ “Qu(e)eries Series,” featuring readings, performances and other events that encourage thoughtful discussion about queerness and, and the store suggests, supply a “prideful alternative to buying a rainbow/American combo flag.” The Qu(e) eries Series runs through June.

WHAT:  “Every Night Is Ladies Night” panel at Modern Times Bookstore, co-sponsored by the GLBT Historical Society. Free and all are welcome.

WHEN:  Friday, May 11, 2007, 7-9 p.m.

WHERE: Modern Times Bookstore, 888 Valencia Street, San Francisco.

The mission of the GLBT Historical Society is to increase public understanding, appreciation, and affirmation of the history and culture of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and other sexual minority individuals and communities. For more information, call 415.777.5455 or visit www.glbthistory.org.
